How the Tip Calculator Works
A tip calculator turns a bill amount and gratuity percentage into the exact tip and final amount due. The basic formula is straightforward: multiply the bill by the tip percentage divided by 100. If a bill is 50 and the selected tip is 20%, the gratuity is 10 and the final total is 60. When several people are paying, the calculator divides both the total bill and the gratuity evenly so each person can see a clear share.
This version goes beyond a single percentage calculation. You can separate tax from the bill, choose whether the gratuity is calculated before or after tax, round a payment upward to a convenient whole amount, and work backward from a final total to estimate the original pre-tip bill. Currency selection changes how values are displayed but does not perform currency conversion, so every amount entered in one calculation should use the same currency.
Tip Calculator Formula
The core tip formula is Tip = Bill × (Tip Percentage ÷ 100). The final amount is Total = Bill + Tip. For an equal group split, Total Per Person = Total ÷ Number of People, while Tip Per Person = Tip ÷ Number of People. These formulas work for restaurant checks, delivery payments, personal services and other situations where a percentage-based gratuity is being added to an amount.
Tip Calculation Example
Suppose the bill amount is 84 and you choose an 18% tip. Multiplying 84 by 0.18 gives a tip of 15.12. Adding that gratuity to the bill produces a final total of 99.12. If three people split the payment equally, each person pays 33.04 in total, including 5.04 of the gratuity. How to Split a Bill With Tip
For an equal bill split, first calculate the gratuity from the shared bill and then divide the final total by the number of people. This keeps the same tip percentage across the group and prevents small arithmetic differences between separate calculations. The Split Bill tab also separates the original bill share from the tip share, which is useful when a group wants to verify how the final per-person amount was produced. If diners owe genuinely different amounts, calculate each person’s underlying share first rather than forcing an equal division.
Tip Before Tax vs. Tip After Tax
Receipts can show a subtotal, tax and final amount, which creates a common question about what amount the percentage should apply to. Customs differ by location and personal preference, so this calculator does not impose one method. In the Tip + Tax tab, choosing the pre-tax option applies the gratuity only to the subtotal. Choosing the after-tax option applies it to the subtotal plus the entered tax. In both cases, the calculator shows tax separately so the calculation remains transparent.
Rounding a Tip or Final Total
Some people prefer a clean whole-number total rather than an exact result with cents or minor currency units. Rounding the grand total upward slightly increases the actual gratuity. Rounding each person’s share upward can increase it further because every individual amount is rounded before the group total is reconstructed. The Round Total tab therefore reports both the adjusted tip and the effective tip percentage after rounding, instead of continuing to display the original percentage as though nothing changed.
Reverse Tip Calculation
If the total already includes a known percentage tip, the original bill can be recovered with Original Bill = Final Total ÷ (1 + Tip Percentage ÷ 100). For example, if a final total of 120 includes a 20% tip, dividing 120 by 1.20 gives an original bill of 100 and a gratuity of 20. The Reverse Tip tab performs this calculation and can also divide both values across a group.
Choosing a Tip Percentage
Tipping customs vary by country, city, service type and individual preference. The percentage presets are convenience buttons, not recommendations. Use the rate that fits the service, local expectations and your own decision. A custom percentage can be entered whenever the preset values do not match the amount you want to leave.
Methodology and Calculation Rules
All calculations run from the values entered in the browser. Percentage tips are calculated with ordinary percentage arithmetic, equal splits divide the final amount by a whole-number group size, tax is calculated independently from the entered pre-tax subtotal, and currency selection is used only for number formatting. The calculator does not retrieve exchange rates, add hidden fees or change the tip percentage unless a rounding option explicitly changes the final amount.
