Body Type Calculator – Somatotype, Shape, WHR, Body Fat & BMI
This Body Type Calculator brings several popular body assessment tools into one place. It can estimate your somatotype, describe your body shape, calculate waist-to-hip ratio, estimate body fat percentage with the U.S. Navy method, and compute BMI with a healthy weight range.
Somatotypes: Ectomorph, Mesomorph, Endomorph
Somatotypes are broad categories used to describe physique trends:
- Ectomorph: naturally lean, narrower frame, usually finds it harder to gain weight.
- Mesomorph: naturally more muscular, athletic frame, gains muscle more easily.
- Endomorph: softer, rounder build, tends to store fat more easily.
This calculator uses height, weight, wrist circumference (frame size), and shoulder width to give a rough somatotype estimate, along with BMI and a short summary.
Body Shape Categories
Body shape labels use measurement ratios around the shoulders, chest or bust, waist, and hips. The calculator can estimate common shapes:
- Male: inverted triangle, trapezoid, rectangle, triangle, oval
- Female: hourglass, pear, apple, rectangle, inverted triangle
These shapes are descriptive rather than medical. Two people with the same measurements can look different depending on posture, muscle, and bone structure.
Waist-to-Hip Ratio (WHR)
WHR compares your waist and hip measurements and is sometimes used as one indicator of health risk. In general, higher ratios may be associated with increased cardiometabolic risk, but only a health professional can interpret your situation properly.
Body Fat Percentage (U.S. Navy Method)
The U.S. Navy method uses height, neck, waist, and hip measurements to approximate body fat percentage. The result is compared with reference ranges such as athlete, fitness, average, and higher body fat categories for men and women.
Body Mass Index (BMI)
BMI is calculated from height and weight and categorized as underweight, normal weight, overweight, or obese according to standard ranges. The calculator also estimates a healthy weight range based on a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9.
