Surface Area Calculator

Calculate surface area and volume for cubes, rectangular prisms, spheres, cylinders, cones, prisms, and pyramids, plus convert between area units.

Surface Area Volume Prisms & Pyramids Unit Converter

All-in-One Surface Area Calculator

Switch between basic shapes, prisms and pyramids, surface area with volume, and a built-in area unit converter.

For a cube, only length is used. For a sphere, only radius is used. For a cylinder, radius and height are used. For a cone, radius and height or slant height are used.

For a triangular prism, the calculator uses triangle base, triangle height, three side lengths and prism length. For a square pyramid, it uses base length and slant height.

Choose a shape and enter theevant dimensions. Unused fields will be ignored for each shape.

This converter uses standard metric and imperial conversion factors for area units.

Surface Area Calculator – Surface Area and Volume of Common 3D Shapes

This Surface Area Calculator helps you quickly find surface area and, when needed, volume for popular 3D shapes: cubes, rectangular prisms, spheres, cylinders, cones, triangular prisms, and square pyramids. It also includes an area unit converter so you can convert between metric and imperial area units.

Surface Area Formulas for Basic Shapes

  • Cube: Surface area = 6a², Volume = a³
  • Rectangular prism (box): Surface area = 2(ℓw + ℓh + wh), Volume = ℓwh
  • Sphere: Surface area = 4πr², Volume = (4/3)πr³
  • Cylinder (closed): Surface area = 2πr² + 2πrh, Volume = πr²h
  • Right circular cone (closed): Surface area = πr² + πrℓ, Volume = (1/3)πr²h

Prisms and Pyramids

For a right triangular prism, the surface area is the sum of the two triangular bases and the three rectangular faces:

SA = 2 × Area of triangle + (side₁ + side₂ + side₃) × length

For a square pyramid with base side a and slant height s, the surface area is:

SA = a² + 2as

Area Unit Conversion

The Area Unit Converter tab lets you convert between mm², cm², m², km², in², ft², yd², acres, and hectares. Internally, the calculator converts everything through square metres using standard conversion factors.

How to Use This Surface Area Calculator

  • Use Basic Shapes to get quick surface area values for individual 3D shapes.
  • Use Prisms & Pyramids when working with triangular prisms or square pyramids.
  • Use Surface Area & Volume when you need both surface area and volume together.
  • Use Area Unit Converter to switch between metric and imperial area units.
